It depends on the project scope. In many areas, yes – a permit is required for larger hardscape installations (for example, building a sizable patio, deck, or a retaining wall that alters drainage). Permits ensure the project meets building codes and won’t negatively impact your property or neighbors (such as causing water runoff issues). Smaller projects like a simple garden path might not need a permit, but anything involving structural work, significant grading, or tying into utilities usually does. Before we start a hardscape project, Bell’s Landscaping will help determine if a permit or site plan is needed. We handle the permitting process for our clients to make sure everything is up to code and stress-free. It’s always a good idea to check first, rather than risk fines or having to redo work later.
Choosing between sod and seed comes down to your priorities.
Sod (pre-grown grass rolls) gives you an “instant lawn” – you’ll have a carpet of green grass literally in a day or two. It establishes quickly, handles foot traffic sooner, and provides full coverage that helps block weeds from the start. The trade-off is cost: sod is more expensive up front (you’re paying for the grower’s time and labor).
Seeding is cheaper and offers more choices in grass varieties, but it requires patience and a lot of care. Seeds take weeks to sprout and months to fill in fully, during which time the lawn is fragile – you’ll need to keep it watered constantly and protect it from weeds, erosion, and foot traffic. In summary, sod is all about speed and reliability (at a higher cost), whereas seed is budget-friendly but slow. Many homeowners opt for sod installation in our region when they want quick results or have smaller areas, and use seed for larger or less critical areas.
Our team can help you decide which approach (or combination) makes sense for your yard.
You can lay sod almost any time during the growing season, but certain times of year are ideal. In the Charleston, SC area (and much of the U.S.), the best windows for sod installation are typically spring and early fall. During these periods, temperatures are milder – not too hot and not too cold – which helps the sod roots establish quickly without stress. For warm-season grasses (like Bermuda or Zoysia), late spring through summer works well since these grasses thrive in heat. For cool-season grasses (like fescue, in cooler regions), late summer to early fall is excellent. We often aim for right before or after the peak of summer. That way the sod avoids the extreme heat of midsummer but still has warmth to grow. That said, sod can be installed in summer with careful watering, or even in winter in mild climates – it will just stay relatively dormant until spring. Bell’s Landscaping will schedule your sod installation for the optimal time so it takes root fast and flourishes.
The cost for a new sod lawn depends on the size of the area, the type of sod, and local pricing, but we can give some ballpark figures. On average, having sod professionally installed can cost around cost about $3.50 per square foot on average, which is more than seeding or hydroseeding but still cheaper than alternatives like artificial turf. For example, if you have a 2,000 sq. ft. yard, the sod itself might be a couple thousand dollars, plus labor for soil prep and installation. Keep in mind that investing in sod gives you an instant lawn and often includes some warranty on the grass. At Bell’s Landscaping, we’ll provide a detailed quote based on your yard’s square footage and the type of grass (we offer a variety of sod types suited for Charleston’s climate). We strive to keep our sod services affordable, and we handle everything from removing old turf to the final roll and watering. While sod costs more upfront than seed, many homeowners find the quick results and reliability well worth it.
